Why conversion tracking comes first in Google Ads
Ads without conversion tracking give you a click count, not a customer count. The four conversions to set up before you spend a budget, and the mistakes we see most often.

Almost every business that comes to us saying "we run ads but don't know if they work" has the same gap: no conversion tracking, or tracking set up wrong. The Google Ads dashboard shows clicks and cost; it does not tell you which click filled in a form, made a call or placed an order. Managing a budget without that is driving with your eyes closed.
What a conversion is, and why clicks are not enough
A conversion is the action that makes you money: a contact form, a phone call, a WhatsApp message, an order. A click is just a visit. A campaign with a hundred clicks a day and zero forms is worse than one with ten clicks and three forms. You only see that with conversion tracking.
The four conversions to set up on day one
- Form submissions. Through a thank-you page or a submit event. Forms that submit without a page reload need event-based tracking.
- Phone calls. Clicks on the site's number and the call extension in the ad are measured separately. On mobile traffic, calls usually outnumber forms.
- WhatsApp clicks. The most used contact channel in Turkey, and unmeasured in most accounts.
- Orders or quote requests. With value if you sell online; a quote form if you sell services.
These four are set up with Google Tag Manager, connected to Google Analytics 4 and imported into Ads. A correct setup takes half a day; a wrong one drives wrong decisions for months.
The most common mistakes
- Counting page views as conversions. If everyone who lands on the contact page counts, numbers inflate and budget drifts to the wrong audience.
- Double counting. If the same form is counted by both the Analytics and the Ads tag, cost per lead looks half of what it is.
- Launching without a test. After setup, fill in a form and wait for it to appear in the dashboard before opening the campaign.
- Looking only at last click. A customer may come from an ad first and return via a Google search later; do not switch off a channel without understanding attribution.
What changes once tracking is in place
You see which keyword brings forms and which one only burns clicks. You move budget weekly to what works. At the end of the month, the question "what did a customer cost us" has an answer.
We set this up first in every account; we cannot manage what is not measured. See our ads management service for details.
